We visit the Macy’s Studio workshop in New Jersey to see how the magic happens!
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an American tradition. It’s been going since 1924. It’s famous for elaborate floats and huge character balloons that bob above the streets as the parade marches forward. Millions of people watch the parade live in New York City each year, but many many more watch it on TV. And some of you have questions! How do balloons float? What’s helium got to do with it?

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipThe Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the largest parades in the country, if not the world.
All these people marching through the streets of New York on Thanksgiving Day.
In fact, more than 5000 people are there.
Plus, these giant parade floats and huge balloons soaring above the streets of New York.
It takes almost two years to make that magic happen.
And it happens right here at the Macy's Parade Studio.
So let's go behind the scenes and find out what they're doing.
Now we're on our studio floor where our team of welders, sculptors, carpenters animators are putting together various floats for the Macys Thanksgiving Day parade this year.
For the last 100 years, we've had a variety of character balloons, floats, marching bands, clowns, and other various performers and musicians that come together.
We like to call it the largest entertainment variety show in America.
It is an extravaganza.
It is an extravaganza, for sure.
This is the bare foundation of any float that you'll see during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This eight foot wide by 30ft long float bed will become something upwards of 35ft tall and 16 to 20ft wide.
We take a series of steps to make our balloons.
We start with a drawing, so we draw- we sketch something on paper, and then we transfer that design to a computer.
Once we have all the pieces assembled, we start to inflate certain sections and then we hand paint every area of the balloon.
So we'll start with a base coat, and then we start working on coats of color.
And then we work on all the detail.
So everything that you see in the Macy's parade is hand-painted from our giant characte balloons to all of our floats.
Thank you for joining us.
Hopefully today's conversation will help you to better understand what's happening behind the scenes and all the excitement and all the work that's gone into making Thanksgiving happen.
