Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) Hello, Arkansas students.
Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
Well, some of our seniors right here in Arkansas know exactly what they're going to do next.
Why don't we watch and find out?
Hi, I'm Jessica Keener, and I'm an education project manager here at Arkansas PBS.
I'm so excited to be here with you to share a very special student spotlight for Rise and Shine.
Now, I bet many of you out there ask yourself, what will I be interested in when I get older and what things like I get to be a part of when I'm in high school and beyond?
Well, I have some very special guests today from my hometown of Mayflower.
They are all doing great things, not only in their school and community.
They are also gearing up for their journey into adulthood.
So let's get to it and meet them.
First, I'd like for you all to share your names and how old you are.
Hi, I'm Anna Allbritton and I'm 17 years old.
Hi, I'm Shaylee and I'm 17 years old.
I'm Holly Raney and I'm 17 years old also.
Awesome.
Okay.
So I have some questions for you guys today.
So are you a part of any clubs or extracurricular activities at school?
I'm a part of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, Drama Club, Shakespeare Club and Spanish Club.
Awesome.
I am president of our FFA Club at Mayflower.
I am in Student Council, National Honor Society, Beta Club, Yearbook.
I'm a part of NHS, National Honor Society, FCCLA, Future Business Leaders of America, FCCLA, Yearbook, Student Council and Spanish Club.
Man, you ladies are part of a lot of clubs.
I bet you guys stay pretty busy.
So what are your plans for after high school and what do you hope to accomplish in the next five years?
I hope to major in political science with a minor in history and then hopefully after I get a job with my major, I hope to go back to school to one day, get a doctorate in history.
And I haven't really decided which college yet.
My top two options are probably UCA or University of Arkansas Little Rock.
I plan to go to UCA and major in chemistry with an emphasis on biology in order to go to med school and then I want, I'd love to become a neurosurgeon or neurologist.
I have type one diabetes.
And so I really want to be a nurse practitioner for kids with type one because it was so good to see people there that also had the disease that I had.
And so I just like want to give back to the community and like make more kids have that same experience that I did.
And I'm committed to play softball at the collegiate level at U of A Rich Mountain.
So it's a two year school.
So I'll be going there after college and then probably transferring to U of A after my two years at that JUCO.
While you guys are going to have such a bright future.
I can't wait to see how that goes.
So this specific question is for Ms. Shayl What advice do you have for the kids as they continue their academic journey into high school?
I would say work as hard as you can because it's not always about who's the smartest in the room or who's got the best background or who's just academically like better than you.
Because it all comes down to who works the hardest because the hardest worker in the room, it's always going to show more than the smartest person.
That is some really great advice.
Awesome.
Holly, this question is for you.
What's the best advice you've ever been given?
Probably to take your days one day at a time.
So if you focus on something like, oh, I have this big event a month from now, you're going to miss all the days leading up to that day.
And so I'm really like especially going to apply that to senior year.
Take it one day at a time and soak up everything so I can have like the best senior year possible.
Right, really live in the moment.
Yeah, that'll be great.
Anna, this question is for you.
Why do you think it's important that kids support their community?
Kids should support their community because communities raise kids.
It takes a village, is the saying, I think communities are a great way for kids to experience new kinds of people, new ways of living.
And by supporting your community, you're allowing your community to do that for other kids as well.
Awesome.
Ok, Shaylee, this one is for you.
How does National Honor Society or Beta prepare students for the future?
It helps give them a foundation in knowing community service and getting to know their community and the students and the kids around them.
So with Beta and NHS, we're able to help the elementary students and volunteer for all the events at that elementary school.
That sounds like a lot of fun.
So before we wrap up, let's have some fun.
Okay.
So I want you guys to give me just one word answers for these questions, Anna, we'll start with you.
What's your favorite food?
Fettuccine alfredo.
Oh, I love pasta too.
Okay, Shaylee, What about you?
Shaylee: Ribeyes.
Oh, that's another good one.
Okay.
Holly, what about you?
What's your favorite food?
Holly: I really like pickles.
Oh, those are great.
Okay, next one.
What's your favorite movie?
Step brothers.
Nice.
Shaylee, what about you?
Encanto.
That's a good one.
I think we've had that one on repeat at my house this summer.
And what about you, Holly?
What's your favorite movie?
Holly: Cinderella.
Wow.
Those are some good ones, too.
Okay.
What's your favorite animal?
Capybaras.
Uh, pigs.
Shaylee, what about you?
Black panther.
Wow.
Okay.
That's pretty cool.
All right.
And one last one question.
Anna, what is your favorite vacation spot?
Oh, Eureka Springs.
Shaylee?
Mine would be Long Beach, California.
I've only been there once, but I liked it.
Jessica: And Holly?
Holly: Wyoming.
Wow.
Those are all really great vacation spots.
Well, that about wraps it up, ladies.
Thank you so much for joining us today and sharing that with all our amazing kids that are watching us.
All of you out there.
Keep thinking about what you'd like to do as you move through your journey in school and beyond.
